ASHwell is a nonprofit, sexual health clinic and social wellness center established in Austin, TX in the late 1980s. Clinically, we specialize in HIV treatment and prevention, Hep C treatment and STI treatment and management. Socially, we specialize in providing programming, resources and services to overcome barriers to health access with the goal of building Health Equity in Austin and Central Texas. ASHwell prioritizes providing a safe, welcoming and discrimination-free space for all, predominantly serving LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. Our approach to sexual health and wellness is rooted in being a proudly sex and kink positive, pro-sex worker, pro-harm reduction and anti-stigma organization that is passionately committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Position Overview 

 
The Director of Strategic Advancement is an executive leadership role responsible for implementing, and implementing strategies to grow the organization's financial resources, partnerships, and community impact. They oversee fundraising, communications, and strategic initiatives to advance the mission of the nonprofit. Their work helps ensure the organization’s sustainability and alignment with its strategic goals. They will oversee and offer hands-on management and guidance to a team of entry and mid-level staff with a strong focus on team collaboration and a coaching approach to management. The Director of Strategic Advancement lead marketing, communications, and fundraising strategies in collaboration with their team, the Executive Director and the Chief Strategies Officer. They will identify, help establish and oversee the development of infrastructure and protocols for the continued development of the Strategic Advancement department. They oversee a team that is responsible for branding and marketing all ASHwell programs, clinical services and events.  

 

Core Responsibilities 

 

Team Managment – 40% 

  • Provide hands-on leadership and guidance to a team of entry and mid-level staff, ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities while fostering a positive, mission-driven work environment 

  • Maintain weekly 1:1 check ins with staff members and biweekly team meetings, tracking PTO, individual goals, workplans and team priorities by quarter 

  • Set and lead tracking of achievable goals and expectations tailored to team members’ experience levels, providing consistent feedback and recognizing accomplishments to build confidence and motivation 

  • Execute annual performance evaluations for team members  

  • Offer mentorship, coaching and professional development opportunities to support team members in building essential skills and growing within their roles 

  • Foster open communication and collaboration within the team, creating a safe space for asking questions, sharing ideas, and addressing challenges. 

  • Monitor team workload and adjust assignments as needed to balance priorities, maintain productivity, and reduce burnout 

  • Act as a liaison between the team and leadership, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and providing updates on team progress and achievements 

  • Track and update departmental workplan in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Strategic Advancement 

 

Communications and Marketing 30% 

  • Develop a strategic communications plan that focuses on brand advancement and expansion of ASHwell’s reach to new target populations 

  • Design & implement strategies to elevate the visibility and public recognition of organizational leadership across key audiences and platforms 

  • Guide development of and manage a comprehensive communication strategy to enhance the organization’s visibility and reputation  

  • Oversee – review, copyedit and approve - the creation of marketing materials, campaigns, press releases, and donor reports  

  • Ensure all internal and external communications maintain organizational voice, tone and strategic messaging 

  • Offer hands on support and training to communications and marketing team members as needed for professional development to ensure ability to meet expectations and goals 

  • Foster collaborations that enhance program delivery and expand the organization’s reach. 

  • Integrate equity, justice, and culturally responsive practices into all advancement efforts. 

  • Ensure that community voices—especially from historically marginalized populations—are central to all strategy development and evaluation 

  • Track and maintain partner relationships 

 

Fundraising and Development 20% 

  • Lead the design and oversee implementation of fundraising campaigns, including annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, and corporate sponsorships. 

  • Oversee planning and execution of annual fundraiser, The HoeDown 

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with donors, foundations, corporations, and community partners. 

  • Collaborate with the Fundraising Coordinator to develop and expand the monthly sustainer program 

  • Oversee grant writing efforts, ensuring alignment with funder priorities and organizational goals. 

  • Identify new revenue opportunities and funding streams 

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to engage them in fundraising and advocacy efforts in collaboration with the Fundraising Coordinator 

  • Provide thought leadership on trends and innovations in philanthropy, community engagement, and nonprofit sustainability. 

 

Baseline – 10% 

  • Attend biweekly Executive Team and Leadership team meetings 

  • Collaborate with Executive Team members to ensure informed and effective cross collaborations 

  • Prepare departmental reports for the Executive Director’s quarterly board meeting 

  • Prepare check-in report and meet weekly with supervisor 

  • Attend “all-staff” meetings, team retreats, and necessary partnership meetings 

  • Maintain up-to-date calendar and work plan 

  • Utilize organization wide systems and protocols for all organizational business 

  • Prepare and attend weekly check-ins with supervisor 

  • Adhere to all ASHwell cultural and operational guidelines and policies 

 

 

Required Qualifications 

  • 10+ years of cumulative experience in a relevant field/s 

  • 5+ years of experience with supervision of direct reports and team management 

  • 3+ years experience with CRMs, analytics tools, mass marketing platforms and software 

  • 3+ years of nonprofit senior executive or leadership role experience 

  • Experience with budget management, tracking and reporting 

  • Demonstrated strength in copy writing and editing for distinct audiences within a given constituency 

  • Cultural proficiency in communications for audiences from marginalized communities based on race, sex, gender, and sexual orientation 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - Teams, Word, Excel, OneDrive, PowerPoint 

  • Lives in Austin, TX or within the greater Austin Metro Area or within 50 miles of ASHwell headquarters at 3800 Red River 

  • In depth understanding of gender and sexual orientation spectrums  

  • High comfort level working in a pro-pleasure, pro-sex, pro-kink and pro-queer environment 

  • Baseline understanding of Harm Reduction and need for HIV de-stigmatization  

  • Alignment with ASHwell values of race and gender justice, sexual and reproductive health equity 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva & similar platforms 

  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge 

  • Proven track record of successful fundraising, including major gifts, individual donors and corporate partnerships 

  • Degree in communications and marketing 

  • Prior experience working in a sexual health and wellness environment 

  • Understanding of HIV, PrEP, HCV and STIs 

  • Prior experience developing and executing a strategic communications plan 

  • Prior experience establishing and maintaining partner relationships 

  • Strong understanding of nonprofit management, communications, and community engagement

ASHwell’s Director of Strategic Advancement is a highly skilled communications and marketing professional, fundraising and development professional or both as a strategic advancement professional. They have the first-hand experience required to build the systems and protocols required for a high output, low-capacity Strategic Advancement  

department. They know how to develop the team’s competencies and the department’s capacity to meet the needs of the organization.  Our Director of Strategic Advancement is a hands-on team leader with a management-first approach. Skilled in development, communications or both, they are excited to adopt the existing plans and departmental vision into a thorough strategy. They are able to communicate complex ideas in an accessible way to forward org-wide comprehension of the Strategic Advancement department’s role and responsibilities.
