Job Summary Are you passionate about public health? Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is seeking dedicated professionals to make a difference in our communities. The Environmental Health Division is seeking an Environmental Health Specialist who will independently administer and monitor the state program activities for the Food Pools and Lodging section in an assigned region. The position manages a caseload of licensed establishments by monitoring compliance with applicable rules and statute and communicating survey results to resolve compliance deviations at businesses to protect public health. The position conducts inspections, collects and analyzes data, and writes summary reports for clients. Technical assistance is provided to clients to assist with gaining compliance. The position also investigates reports of non-compliant operations. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
MDH relies heavily on grant funding, in addition to state appropriated dollars. As an agency, we continually monitor funding levels and navigate some degree of uncertainty related to grant cycles and the impact of the grant funding on program priorities. This position is currently funded and approved to be filled. While the position is funded at this time, future funding is dependent on the continuation of our funding sources. The Minnesota Department of Health works proactively to sustain programs and maintain our workforce, to avoid reductions in force to the very best of our ability. In the event of a loss of funding resulting in a necessary workforce reduction, that process is governed by our collective bargaining agreements and compensation plans. This vacancy is being posted at both the Public Health Sanitarian 1 and 2 levels, the level at which the positions will be filled will be based on the successful candidate's qualifications. This position may require working longer days occasionally in order to accommodate long-distance travel and the client's schedule. This position will have the option of teleworking; however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion and only up to 50% of the time for applicants residing in Minnesota or a bordering state within 50 miles of the work location. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Public Health Sanitarian 1 Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates may be hired on a provisional basis, without a current or renewable REHS/RS credential with evidence of: A bachelor's degree OR a degree-in-progress in environmental health, sanitary science, sanitary engineering, chemistry, biology, or other related environmental health field which includes at least 30 semester or 45 quarter hour credits in the physical or biological sciences. To become credentialed in Minnesota as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) a candidate may apply to sit for the NEHA computer-based REHS/RS exam, taken at an approved Pearson VUE testing location, OR apply for Minnesota REHS/RS reciprocity (when currently registered by NEHA or registered in another state as an REHS/RS). This position does not require a driver's license but demands some travel that the candidate is responsible for meeting.
