New Jersey Resources is seeking a Manager Accounting Research and Policy to manage the Company's accounting policy and procedures function, including the interpretation of new guidance issued by accounting/reporting standard setting bodies. Research and advise on accounting/reporting implications associated with the Company's business activities. Major Responsibilities • Research technical accounting and financial reporting requirements promulgated by the FASB, SEC, AICPA, FERC and other standard setting bodies. • Actively monitor and ensure timely identification of and compliance with new and emerging guidance. • Develop and manage implementation project plans as needed. • Partner with the business unit accountants during the transitional period when new guidance has been implemented or new complex transactions are being recorded to ensure conclusions reached and policies are being adhered to. • Identify financial accounting/reporting and risk exposure implications that might result from standard setting. • Provide interpretations and implementation solutions, including process changes where needed, to key stakeholders, such as within corporate finance, accounting, IT and business units. • Initiate discussions with Management Committee members, solicit input and responses and formulate and present Company positions with respect to proposed accounting standards. • Prepare comprehensive white papers detailing assumptions and conclusions surrounding GAAP rules and impact to company transactions, where applicable. • Analyze the impact of alternative accounting treatments for new transactions and perform other accounting impact studies as required or requested by Senior and Executive Management or by other departments for business planning and forecasting purposes. • Participate in discussions with business units to understand the design and strategy of new transactions for the purpose of determining viable options for structuring transactions and/or contractual provisions that will maximize operational and accounting goals. • Formalize the continued development of the company’s accounting policy and procedures roadmap. • Lead initiatives to refresh existing base of technical accounting policy memoranda, as needed. • Partner with accounting managers to understand legacy policies, with a critical eye toward assessing that policies are evolving properly in compliance with Codification updates. • Participate in peer utility focus group discussions to gain additional insights on industry views and strategies on accounting and reporting issues. Position Requirements: • Bachelors degree in accounting plus CPA required, Masters/MBA preferred. • Minimum of five years experience in technical accounting/financial reporting role in a large public company experience is required; \"Big 4\" and utility or energy industry is a plus. • Strong knowledge of GAAP, SEC and other regulatory accounting/reporting requirements and application, as well as an in-depth understanding of the accounting standard setting process. • Independent thinker with a proactive mindset. • Strong analytical and project planning skills with ability to research theoretical concepts, conclude on impacts, and implement solution frameworks for regulatory mandates and new transactions. • Strong communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to be able to convey technical information to diverse groups, including senior management, audit committee, business and accounting managers, and auditors in a concise manner. * The above job description is reflective of the primary duties of this position and in no way limits the supervisor from assigning any other duties, responsibilities or initiatives as deemed necessary.
